Beauty is relative and needs context. And anyway: a tool must be effective and efficient - not beautiful. A superfluous add-on?

Quite the opposite. Of course, function is the top priority for industrial products and tools. But today we develop and use products in a culturally characterised world. Technical function alone is not enough - it is a prerequisite.

What is culture? Culture encompasses the totality of all ideas and meanings as well as the material and immaterial things that arise from them. It also includes values that enable us to live together successfully. Our world of objects and goods, industry, crafts, art, sport, music, literature, education, medicine - all of this exists because our earliest ancestors began to perceive more than just their growling stomachs. Because they developed culture, ultimately civilisation. Our entire product world is an expression of this culture. It contains knowledge, experience, craftsmanship, creative awareness and the attitude of the people who develop it.

A well-designed product shows respect for the user and for the context in which it is used. It supports the work, motivates and promotes identification. This leads to better results, greater enjoyment of use and, ultimately, economic success.

Design is therefore not just an add-on. It consciously aligns technical expertise with people's needs and expectations. It makes quality visible and tangible - and thus contributes to products doing more than just fulfilling their pure function. They become part of a successful industrial and cultural practice.

Interested?

‘Beautiful’ is not a term that designers work with in isolation.
