01 Assistive Technology.

ESCHENBACH optaro XL –
Foldable camera stand module for iPad-based magnification.

Initial situation

Development of a foldable stand and camera system for use with an Apple iPad. The iPad functions as a display and control unit, while the integrated camera in the stand provides magnification and image transmission.

Challenge
Large contact surface combined with compact folding geometry, variable iPad case dimensions, ensuring full functionality of the iPad, high stability requirements for reading and writing, target group with limited vision and low technical affinity.

Solution
Radical simplification of the basic design, development of a clearly guided folding architecture, defined support and fixing points for the iPad, high stability when open, flat, flush-fitting and transportable when closed, free working space under the device for handwritten activities.

Result

A structurally well-organised and attractive assistance system that transforms a standard iPad into a fully-fledged reading device. Mobile use – stationary resilience – intuitive understanding.

SENSECA – Pro-Line
Multifunctional handheld measuring device.

Initial situation
Development of a modular handheld measuring device for a wide range of physical parameters. For experts and occasional users alike.
Challenge
High functional complexity with universal range of applications, different user profiles (specialist users and laymen), risk of overloaded menu structures, design requirements: upward demoulding, waterproof housing, variable sensor cover.
Conflict
Functional diversity vs. ease of use, universal device vs. clear structure, housing moulding and sealing concept, modularity vs. design reduction.
Result
A universally applicable measuring system with a logical menu structure and clear cause-and-effect relationships, clearly structured information architecture on the display, reduction of the number of buttons to a universal control set (minimises operating errors and training time). The new design allows for a robust, sealed housing with modular variability. Complex measurement technology becomes structured, not complicated.

04 Smart Heating

Schneider Electric / Wiser / Eberle / Drayton
Networked heating control system for retrofitting.

Initial situation
Development of a modular smart heating system consisting of a hub, room controller and radiator thermostats for retrofitting. For both tech-savvy and non-tech-savvy users. The aim was to make digital heating control understandable, accessible and trustworthy.
Challenge
High technological complexity in the background. Retrofit application in sensitive residential environments. Hesitation towards smart home technology. Balance between innovation and familiarity.
Solution
Development of a clear, calm design language across all system components. Minimalist geometries suitable for living spaces. Operating concept based on familiar patterns: rotary movement on the radiator thermostat for temperature adjustment.
Result
Complex technology is translated into understandable, intuitive interaction. The minimalist design reduces inhibitions. High acceptance in the home environment.

05 High-End Audio

Burmester Audio – Phase
Compact high-end audio system.

Initial situation

Development of a compact high-end music system with speakers.

Challenge

Integration of high-quality audio technology into a compact system, differentiation in an environment of increasingly digitalised, invisible audio systems, precise alignment of the loudspeakers at ear level (despite their low profile), visible precision and material authenticity as the core of the brand.

Solution
Targeted speaker tilt for alignment, supplementary height adjustment, free-swinging tubular steel frame for functional tilt implementation, reference to classic modernism as cultural enrichment, visible structural logic as part of the aesthetic approach and brand essence.

Result

A compact, high-end system with precise dispersion characteristics and clear spatial positioning. The design logic is visible and culturally charged. Technical necessity, spatial presence and brand identity merge to create a sound object with architectural appeal. Multiple award winner.

06 Building Services Engineering

Wieland gesis® NRG
Flat cable system connectors.

Initial situation
Development of a modular flat cable system for structured energy and data distribution in buildings. In addition to energy distribution, the system also enables the combined integration of KNX, SMI and DALI. The aim was to create a formally and functionally stringent system architecture with clear handling logic.

Challenge
Strict technical and normative specifications, economically highly sensitive installation environment, different application scenarios within a system, need for fast, low-error assembly, making the system character visible despite modular diversity.

Solution
Development of a consistent design language across all system components, characteristic curvature as a recognisable system feature, connections consistently positioned at the curved end – clear orientation logic, clear visual separation of functional elements, system identity despite different component sizes, the shape becomes a navigation code in the installation process.

Result
A modular installation system with a clearly legible system architecture.
The clear orientation reduces assembly time and the risk of errors.
Design consistency supports planning and cost-effectiveness.
Winner of the German Design Award and iF Design Award, among others.
